Luckily, lots of people are experiencing the same things so that makes it easier to find advice online. We try and plan when we camp in advance to account for the things we know our dog is going to need. Here’s our list of tips and tricks to make camping with dogs less stressful – literally!
Secure Your Dog
If you plan on camping near other campers or people passing through, you may want to keep your dogs on leashes. Make sure your dog’s collar is secure to prevent losing them at camp. Keep in mind that a leash won’t stop a curious pet from getting too close to an animal he or she might not like.

Potty Time
If you plan on letting your dog out at night to go potty, make sure your leash is brightly colored so that if they do get loose they can be spotted easily by passersby or park rangers. also good to buddy up with another sites dedicated to taking care of each others dogs when they need a bathroom break.
We also like to bring pooper scoop bags for when we go for walks or hikes in the woods, so you don’t have to carry an additional bag with you.
Track Your Dog
When your dog runs away from you in camp, I highly recommend getting a GPS tracker and putting it on their collar. I’ve had this happen twice in the past four years with my dogs and the tracker has helped you locate them.
If He Barks A Lot
If you have a dog that barks at everything and anything, a muzzle could help. A muzzle will also protect non-barking dogs from aggressive ones, which can be scary for the latter.
Tire Them Out
Dogs are natural explorers and creatures of habit. We love taking ours on several small walks throughout the day when we go camping, which helps ensure that they will be too exhausted to care about anyone or anything else at night!

If your dog has not been vaccinated against rabies in the last year, it’s important that they get a booster shot before you head out on your camping trip. Not only will this protect them from any diseases found in wildlife, but it also protects other people from contracting any diseases from them if they come into contact with other animals while on your trip.
Hydrate
Make sure that your dog has plenty of water at all times! Take a lot more water than you think they need.Dogs can get dehydrated faster than humans because they don’t sweat like we do, so make sure they’re drinking plenty of water when it’s hot outside—and don’t forget about them at night when it gets cold! Water bowls that don’t easily tip over are best.
Be Mentally Prepared And Be Patient
Camping with a dog can create new challenges. I camp solo, so my dog gets tethered to my waist while I set up the tent. It takes longer than it should and usually there’s some tripping and a lot of, “no, don’t go in yet!”
Well trained dogs can be a great asset in the wilderness, but you need to plan for them carefully before bringing them along.
